Close Reading Lesson: Faithful Elephants by Yukio Tsuchiya

Close reading is when a reader analyzes the details of a text to make interpretations and develop a deep understanding of the passage. Often the reader uses a short text and rereads the passage several times focusing on a different literary element with each read... Continue Reading

Model Close Reading Annotation Using "I Have a Dream" by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Every year in January, I take time to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with students by: reading about his life, listening to his speeches, and discussing his message. I am always amazed after teaching about MLK for over 18 years, that I still learn something new or that I am inspired in some new way by his words. Today I am sharing with you how I work on the critical close reading concept of annotating a text using Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

Teach Sequence of Events– Free Sequencing Worksheets for Kindergarten and Grade 1

Sequencing is the skill that is used when a reader lists the events of a story in the order that they occurred in, from first to last. For a student to fully comprehend a story he or she must be able to organize the events of the story in sequential order. Free Printable New Year Activities for Students, Grades 1–5

Fun Winter Holiday Writing Activities Elementary Students Will Love

Two of my favorite books to read in December are The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg and The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth. I love to use these books not only because children adore them, but also because my students are usually familiar with both of them. This familiarity allows me to do more extension activities, rather than focusing only on comprehension. When children are already comfortable with a book’s storyline and have a good understanding of it, I like to focus on writing activities that use the text. Both of these books are great mentor texts for creative writing.
