Thanksgiving Reading Comprehension FREEBIE– Milly and the Macy's Parade

If you have visited my blog before you know that I try to incorporate my students' current interests into my lesson plans. I believe students learn best and retain the information being taught when they are engaged in the content being studied. Working with elementary school level students, I find that it is always a hit when I tie in the holiday of the month into my lessons. In November of last year, I stumbled upon the book Milly and the Macy's Parade by Shana Corey—and my students just adored it. It was a great book to use before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Reading Survey for Students; Getting to Know your New Class of Readers

The start of a new school year brings excitement and anticipation to teachers and students alike. Each party to the relationship is wondering about the personality and interests of the other. As a teacher, I know that those first few weeks of school can really set the tone for the rest of the year. I always walk a fine line between wanting my students to enjoy and look forward to coming to school, and making sure that they understand our class rules and routines. At the same time that I am establishing a class structure that ensures all students feel comfortable taking risks and expressing themselves, I am also trying to get to know each student as a reader.
