Teaching the 10 Commandments to Kids

The 10 Commandments are the Laws of God’s covenant given to Moses on Mount Sinai. These Laws were followed by the Israelites and are God’s Laws for us, today, as well. The 10 Commandments show us as Catholics how to live a life of love.

The first three commandments help us to show love and respect for God:

1. I am the LORD your God: you shall not have strange gods before me.
2. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the LORD’S day.

The other seven to show love and respect for others and for ourselves:

4. Honor your father and your mother.
5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

Though important to our faith life as Catholics, the 10 Commandments are not always easy to teach. To assist Catholic catechists, teachers, and parents, I've bundled together 10 Commandments activities for kids into a printable toolkit. Together, these free resources will help you easily and effectively teach the 10 Commandments to kids at every stage of their religious formation.

These 10 Commandments activities for kids will encourage your students to live a life of love and follow God's Laws!

10 Commandments Tablet Printable

The first resource in the toolkit is a printable handout that lists the 10 Commandments on stone tablets. Use this resource as the 10 Commandments are introduced to students. This resource is perfect to use alongside 10 Commandment activities and is available in multiple options to best meet your needs and printing preferences. Catechists might want to display the largest size in a classroom or community setting and send the smaller size handout with children to share with their families at home. Full color or black and white options make customizing simple. Black and white pages are wonderful canvases for primary and intermediate student’s creativity.

The 10 Commandments Coloring Page

The second resource in the toolkit is a 10 Commandments coloring page featuring Moses ideal for use with preschool or primary-aged children. This activity can accompany the story of Moses receiving the 10 Commandments from God. Share the story from a children’s Bible before you distribute the coloring page. Children can take home their completed page to share with family members. Challenge children to recount the Bible story to family members at home as well! Get the coloring page by downloading the Teaching the 10 Commandments to Youth Toolkit now.

Six Tips for Teaching the 10 Commandments Effectively eBook

The third resource in the toolkit helps catechists find inspiration and effectively teach the 10 Commandments to students. When you download the Teaching the 10 Commandments to Youth Toolkit you'll get access to this resource written from the experience and perspective of a middle school catechist and is ideal for upper elementary and junior high application. The eBook will help catechists teach about the covenant and the commandments and find suggestions for things to do and to avoid doing while teaching the 10 Commandments to Catholic kids.

In Summary

With these 10 Commandments activities for kids, you will support catechists in teaching the commandments and encourage students to live a life of love and follow God's Laws. Download the Teaching the 10 Commandments to Youth Toolkit now!
