Fun Fall Activities for Families that Celebrate God's Creation

Bring Catholic family members together around the care of God’s Creation with a fun fall activities resource. Pope Francis once said, “The family remains the basic unit of society and the first school in which children learn the human, spiritual and moral values which enable them to be a beacon of goodness, integrity and justice in our communities.” Help families to fulfill their role as this “first school” with suggestions for fun fall activities that simultaneously encourage faith sharing and care for creation.

Catholic families will grow closer together as they celebrate the beauty of God’s creation during the season of autumn. This seasonal resource includes four multisensory activity suggestions for family members to do together. Ideal for families with preschool and primary aged children, this resource can also be used within the parish and school setting.

Often, with the start of a new school year and religious education programs, the fall can be a hectic time. The slower, longer days of summer are replaced by shorter days filled with many obligations. During these busy times, it is even more important to take time for fun fall activities for families and to pray, celebrate, share, and live their faith together.

It’s also important to reflect together on the beauty and wonder of the gift of God’s creation. Autumn offers unique opportunities to observe God’s amazing creation: for example, the bounty of the harvest, the changing colors of the leaves, the migration of birds to southern climates, the first frosty nights of the year.

Connecting everyday experiences to a life of faith is an easy and effective way to help bring family members closer to one another and to God. This resource, ideal for families with early childhood and primary aged children, offers four seasonal activity suggestions for family members to do together during fall to enjoy each other and the beauty of God’s creation.

Busy families will appreciate the simplicity of the activities. They can be carried out easily and without much preparation or required materials. Additionally, the activities are multisensory to awaken in each participant a real connection to the season as part of God’s wonderful creation.

Share this resource with the families in your religious education program to inspire the time their family shares together this fall. Or, as a variation, plan a parish event in which you incorporate some or all of the suggestions in the fun fall activities for families resource. Families within your program will form bonds while family members do.

Catechists of preschool and primary aged children may also appreciate the seasonal suggestions for classroom use.
