Vacation Postcards– A Summer Vocabulary Activity

I love getting mail and I know my students do, too. Just in time for summer, here is a unique vocabulary activity that will encourage students to use their vocabulary and then get their results mailed to them! Download the You've Got Mail Vocabulary Activity and share it with students before they head off on their summer break.

You've Got Mail... Vocabulary Mail!

This week’s summer vocabulary worksheet is a postcard template that you can copy onto cardstock. Students decorate the front of their postcard with a scene from an imaginary vacation, and on the back, write to themselves about their “vacation” using as many vocabulary words as possible.

Once the students’ summer vocabulary postcards are complete, they should address the postcard to themselves. You can mail the postcards off a few weeks after summer vacation begins, or you can hand them back to your students at the beginning of the next school year, to refresh their memories of the words they learned the previous year.

I know many students will really enjoy the artistic aspect of this vocabulary activity, as well as having fun figuring out ways to use as many vocabulary words as possible in a very limited space. You might want to award prizes for the best drawing, the funniest note, the most words used, the best vacation spot, and so on.

In addition to the postcards, they write to themselves, give students a second postcard that is stamped and addressed to your school. Encourage them to write and mail you a postcard this summer, using as many of their vocabulary words as possible. Tell them you will hang up on the bulletin board any postcards you receive, and use them as examples for next year.
