How to Create Student Vocabulary Game Boards to Review Words, Grades 3–12

Have you seen my Vocab Land Game Board? Out of all of the amazing creations the graphics team has come up with based on my simple, typed ideas, it is my absolute favorite. However, I have a feeling that my students, and your students, can come up with equally awesome vocabulary game board designs if given a chance. That is why this week, instead of presenting you and your students with a fully finished vocabulary game board that only needs to have the vocabulary words filled in, I offer instead a blank template for students to create their own vocabulary game, including a theme, name, and rules.

I might suggest that you ask students to use at least twenty words in the creation of their vocabulary game – from the name itself to the various design elements, game board pieces, and directions.

I would give students at least a week to create their games and award prizes for most creative, best adherence to a theme, most unique, most literary connections, etc.

With the help of my graphics team, I oversaw the creation of this vocabulary activity download. My goal was to give you everything you need to create vocabulary game boards in your classroom. The 6-page download includes:

  • Activity Directions
  • Game Board Instruction Sheet
  • Two Game Board Templates
  • Game Piece Template
  • Blank Game Cards

If you're an English Language Arts teacher, I promise you will want these vocabulary resources! This is an activity that will challenge students to use writing skills, creative thinking, vocabulary, and more. Plus, you can use four of the templates for another lesson plan or game.

Please, share pictures with me of your students’ best creations whether on Facebook, Twitter or in the comments below – I can’t wait to see some amazing results!
