Reinforce the Importance of Grammar & Writing with a Superstar Certificate

I remember the days of teaching grammar when students’ eyes glazed over and they checked out of the lesson. While not every day can be filled with the most engaging, out-of-your-seat activity, there is a great teaching tip that encourages students to engage with the text. Because writing and grammar are often intertwined, there are three steps that address both aspects. Many teachers have used this format and I will borrow the terms from Penny Kittle to help us remember: Bless, Press, and Address.

Bless: Emphasize the positive. Students need to know what they are doing well as well as what they need to improve.

Press: Ask questions. Inquiry is a lifelong skill that encourages multiple levels of thinking.

Address: Look at specifics. What is the most important skill that needs to be improved? That should be identified and worked through with the student.
