Common Core Grammar & Writing Exercises, Grades 3–12

Teachers are not alone in the time of the CCSS!

The Common Core State Standards are a set of educational goals with a synergistic approach. Standards provide a common starting place for grade levels across the nation and are not meant to be the end; rather, the standards provide a beginning on which students can build their knowledge and demonstrate understanding.

Each week on the Core Grammar Blog I will be sharing grammar activities and writing exercises that align with the new standards. The following two grammar activities, one for grades 3-5 and one for grades 6-12, provide an example of what is to come in the CCSS section of my blog. In addition to the standard, a discussion about how to use the standard in the classroom will be provided, and printable common core resources.

Today's grammar exercise for grades 3–5 focuses on Common Core State Standard L.5.1.B that states:

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

b. Form and use the perfect verb tenses (e.g. I had walked; I have walked; I will have walked)

Today's grammar exercise for grades 6–12 focuses on Common Core State Standard W.8.4 that states:

Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
