I've created a vocabulary social media challenge that is perfect for our digitally savvy students and will encourage them to keep track of the words they spot and stumble upon this summer! With the Social Media Summer Challenge Vocabulary Activity students will record the words they spot while on break and then share them on social media using a designated #hashtag.
I was talking to seniors last weekend at a virtual graduation party and they remarked how excited they still get every time they hear a vocabulary word. Their enthusiasm filled me with pride! Our discussion evolved into brainstorming ways we could stay connected and instantly share our vocabulary finds with one another. I left my virtual party with a plan that would keep me connected with my seniors moving on, and a new vocabulary activity idea!
How it works
Download and share my Social Media Summer Challenge Vocabulary Activity recording sheet with students. Then explain that over summer break they need to keep their eyes and ears open to the vocabulary words that surround them in everyday life. When a student encounters a vocabulary word, they need to use their recording sheet to note the "who, what, when, and where" of their vocab moment!
Now.... the most important part of this summer vocabulary challenge!
Students must fill in their Social Media Summer Challenge Vocabulary Activity recording sheet with their vocabulary encounters, but the most important aspect of this challenge is that they share their finds with the digital world! Come up with a hashtag that your students will use to socially share their summertime vocabulary moments. For example your hashtag could be #VocabThrill, #VocabThrill2020, #SummerVocabChallenge.
This hashtag will allow everyone in the class to stay connected and see the vocabulary words their peers are spotting!
When students return to school in the fall, they can turn in their sheets for bragging rights as to who not only spotted, but also shared, their vocabulary excitement the most.
