This base ten numbers and place value lesson plan for grades 3–8 combines non-fiction chart reading with mathematics to show students math is everywhere! From fun infographics posted online, to the weather app on smartphones, math is woven into almost every facet of life. These “Snapshots” of math in everyday life are opportunities to reinforce math concepts!
This lesson also emphasizes “transdisciplinary” learning, (Defined as: involving more than one discipline or subject) showing how math can be seen through the lens of reading, writing, science, and social studies.
Objectives:
To read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
To compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
To interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and to explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
Student Expectations:

Students will work cooperatively in groups.

Students will use non-fiction material and math journal.

Students will record their solutions and be ready to share them with the class.

To provide clear expectations, this base ten numbers and place value lesson plan uses the instructional model: “I do” (the teacher provides explicit instruction and/or modeling), “We do” (the teacher and the students practice together), and “You do”’ (the students independently practice the skill).
