Literature Awards and Book Clubs, Grades 1–8

Recently some of the mothers at the preschool where my own children attend started a book club. Our first book was Pulitzer Prize winner, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. If you are thinking about starting or joining a book club, I do not recommend starting off with an 800 page book (only three of us finished the book). Even with everyone not having read the book in its entirety, the book still elicited a rich discussion amongst the group and inspired me as a literacy teacher. Inspiring Young Readers; Download Your Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library PDF

I mentioned in a previous post that through my blog I would be sharing with you 'inspiring reads.' These are books that 'inspire' my students that typically do not enjoy reading, to want to read. This means I am always on the lookout for good books, and my students know that. so now they are bringing me their favorite books. It warms my heart when one of my students just can't wait to share a book with me. This month's 'inspiring read' was brought to my attention by several students before I added it to my classroom library, Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein.
