Professional Development: What “Counts” As Writing?

Last summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to work as a Teacher Consultant with the Wyoming Writing Project and co-presented a session on “Reading & Writing as Argument” at the University of Wyoming. The audience was composed of both elementary and secondary teachers. One anchor chart that was presented asked: What counts as writing?

What_Counts_As_Writing_GrammarThe answers ranged from “anything that communicates an idea” to “only those assignments prescribed by a teacher.” Some teachers specifically said tweeting was writing while others contrasted that with “not tweets.” Ideas were contradictory, complex, and varied.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (3rd edition, English Language Arts Standards for teachers of students 11-18+) says the following about the interrelated skills of reading and writing: “A text may be spoken, written, or constructed solely of images. There is power in all words, but the written word is forever” (“Introduction”).

What if writing looked like a quickwrite, a text, a blog? If a text in reading can be a painting, a photograph, or a mural then couldn’t writing also be a billboard, an advertisement, or a commercial?

As I reflected on forms of writing, I couldn't help but jot down simple writing ideas teachers could incorporate into the classroom this month.

K-5      

  • Write a newspaper ad featuring a toy you would like to receive this holiday
  • Create a celebration poster that relates to a holiday
  • Quickwrite: What feelings do you associate with the holidays?

6-12

  • Create a billboard with your holiday shopping list
  • Blog about your favorite holiday
  • Quickwrite: If you could spend the holidays anywhere, where would it be? What should be the most popular holiday item? Create an advertisement promoting the product.

 

I challenge you to take time this week to consider what counts as writing in your classroom. How can those examples of writing be used to supplement grammar instruction or improve students’ uses of grammar?
