Halloween-Themed Grammar Terms Crossword Puzzle, Grades 6–12

For many of us, the onset of Halloween means an end to the first quarter of school. Students might be finishing up projects or taking those first high-stakes tests of the year. Because students work at different speeds, some groups or individuals might be done with a project while others needs more time. How do you fill that time with quality and meaningful work?

I suggest having "go-to" grammar exercises readily available for students that finish assignments early. Encourage students to use their free time to review grammar rules! Remind them that the more time they participate in grammar practice within the walls of the classroom, the less they have to do outside of class!

In grammar instruction, identification of key grammar elements is part of the learning process. My idea this week is to have students identify the correct grammar vocabulary term in the clue then find the word in the word bank that fits in the boxes on the crossword puzzle. This activity reinforces student's identification of key grammar elements and fosters recognition to aid in student learning. It's also a great "go-to" exercise for students to do when faced with some free time.
