Summer Adjectives and Action Words Worksheet, Grades 3–5

Summertime can be filled with adventures. Capturing those adventures through descriptive writing is a great way to keep students writing and thinking about language this summer. With my free printableCombining Adjectives and Action Words Activity students will combine adjectives and action words to write a descriptive summertime story.

Adjectives and Action Words in Descriptive Writing

Last week I took my sons on a hike in a national park. The summery sunshine encouraged us to hike a couple of miles on the trails.

Listening to my children talk made me think about ways in which young people use language. Specifically, the ways in which children combine adjectives and action words to create a scene and retell their observations of nature.

Descriptive writing comes to life when writers combine adjectives and action words.

We saw a bald eagle soaring high in the sky. We saw fish swimming swiftly in the stream. We saw antelope munching grass in the meadow. (Can you tell we live in Montana?)

As my children spoke of everything they saw on our adventure, I was again reminded that descriptive writing comes to life when writers combine adjectives and action words.

Action Words vs. Adjectives

An action word tells what someone or something does.

An adjective describes a noun by telling how many or what kind.

This summer, encourage students to take advantage of the multiple opportunities that summertime adventures provide to practice combining adjectives and action words!

Free Adjectives and Action Words Worksheet

I created a free printable worksheet that students can use to practice making different combinations of adjectives and actions words.

Then have students use the lined paper template (included in the download) to write their own descriptive story combining adjectives and action words to tell their summer adventure!
