Beverly's Monthly Article: Teaching Meaningful Revision to Deepen Students' Writing

Teachers understand that revision is an integral part of the writing process. Revision is the stage in which students grow as writers, readers, and thinkers. Teachers understand, also, that revision is hard work, presenting many challenges to motivate students to revise. Teaching revision is crucial to the development of all students’ writing abilities, and teachers need to design lessons that engage students in critically reading, revising, and celebrating writing.

I have outlined five strategies that teachers can use to help students become better writers and revisionists while meeting the expectations of the Common Core State Standards. Teaching revision takes time, patience, and commitment. The effort allows students to engage in experimentation, risk-taking, and the development of writing.
