ACT®* Test Grammar Practice: Choosing Correct Words

Word choice is emphasized in writing and in literature. Teachers read passages aloud from F. Scott Fitzgerald because of the wonderful language choices the author has made. Word choice and precision in writing is a skill assessed by the ACT suite of tests.

Spotlighting skills every day is one way teachers can support a grammar-rich environment and prepare students for exams.

Help students review word choice with my ACT Test Practice: Choosing Correct Words. The practice worksheet below mirrors the types of sentences students will see on the ACT/SAT®*exams and their suite of assessments.

Here is a preview of what you can expect to see on the printable worksheet:

Directions: The grammar practice below mirrors the types of sentences students will see on the ACT test. Some questions ask about options that are NOT acceptable, so remind students to read the questions carefully.

  1. There had been proposals for a new system, but that took decades to fix the many issues in regard to politics, finances, and technology.

A. NO CHANGE
B. it
C. those
D. delete the underlined portion

Because the ACT test are offered throughout the school year, teachers can help students to strengthen language and grammar skills all year long. Download an ACT Grammar Practice Worksheet on choosing correct words to help students prepare for the grammar and writing sections of the exam.
